They asked more questions, and Jones answered them. But, I wasn’t listening. I was too busy with my own thoughts.

Things had moved from the “Cops and Robbers” plane. I was tangling with a situation which was well beyond the scope of Police Duties… and, God knows, that scope can be wide enough. Ordinary crooks, I could deal with. Even extraordinary crooks—the Dilton-Emmet type. But governments—international skulduggery—was something very different. We’d suddenly moved into the most select league of all—and I wasn’t at all sure I wanted to play in that league.

In a nutshell, I’d had the pants scared off me.
